Morning in New York. The city pulses with its familiar, vibrant hustle and bustle. Frida Aasen stepped into the café where I awaited her, clad in vintage-style Levi’s jeans, a classic white tee, and simple, comfortable sneakers. With minimal accessories, she exuded effortless style—casual yet undeniably chic. A true fashionista.

There was an unmistakable Victoria’s Secret aura about Aasen’s figure, evoking memories of her graceful walk down the runway in the 2017-2018 shows—sexy, authentic, and brimming with passion. But then, my mind involuntarily drifted to another image of her, not on the runway, but on horseback,—swift, elegant, and determined. The discipline and natural beauty of the Norwegian equestrian shine through in every movement.

Frida Aasen settled opposite me, a smile gracing her lips, and thus our conversation began.

Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam (HBZVN): Frida, you’ve worked with Victoria’s Secret, an iconic brand in the fashion industry. How would you describe the brand’s influence on your personal style, both on and off the runway?

FRIDA AASEN: Being a part of Victoria’s Secret has truly been a pivotal moment in my career. The brand’s iconic aesthetic has not only shaped my professional path but also influenced my personal style significantly. Walking for them, especially in such a monumental fashion event, was a dream come true that developed my confidence immensely. It has opened numerous doors for me, marking a major milestone in my journey as a model. I feel so lucky to have been a part of such an extraordinary experience!

HBZVN: You looked absolutely stunning in the Nina Ricci by Harris Reed at Cannes. How did you decide on that particular outfit? What’s your process when selecting a show-stopping look for a big event like Cannes Film Festival?

FRIDA AASEN: Preparing for the Cannes Film Festival is always a fun experience! My stylist, Kristina Askerova, and I aimed to create something a bit more unconventional for last year’s event, and when she introduced me to the Nina Ricci look by Harris Reed, I instantly knew it was the one. The outfit blends elegance, chicness, and just the right amount of sexiness, which felt perfect for the occasion.

Selecting a look for a big event like Cannes is truly a collaborative process. My team and I brainstorm together, exploring fresh ideas each year to keep things exciting. It’s all about having fun and embracing creativity.

HBZVN: You’ve mentioned that the mood during red carpet preparations was fun and relaxed, especially with friends like your hair stylist Alexandre Reboul and makeup artist Kelly McClain around. How important is it to have a strong support system when preparing for such high-profile events?

FRIDA AASEN: Having a strong support system is incredibly important when preparing for something like the Cannes red carpet. It can be nerve-wracking, but having friends like my hair stylist Alexandre Reboul and makeup artist Kelly McClain by my side makes all the difference. Their presence brings a sense of fun and relaxation to the preparation process. It’s all about creating a nice atmosphere before the red carpet!

HBZVN: How do you keep your beauty routine fresh and maintain that glow, both on and off the red carpet?

FRIDA AASEN: I believe it really comes down to what you put into your body. I focus on eating well and staying hydrated and I avoid drinking alcohol. Additionally, I absolutely swear by incorporating a cold plunge every morning and regular sauna sessions into my routine. It helps me feel my best both in my personal life, but also keeps me ready all year for my work.

HBZVN: How do you prepare for a photoshoot or runway show to bring your best self forward?

FRIDA AASEN: This job requires me to stay ready all year round, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle and staying active has become second nature to me. It’s all about integrating wellness into my daily routine, making it something that isn’t a “chore”, but rather just part of my everyday life.

HBZVN: Fashion and beauty often intersect. How do you feel the fashion industry has evolved in terms of embracing diverse beauty standards, and how do you see your role in that shift?

FRIDA AASEN: The fashion industry has certainly evolved significantly in embracing diverse beauty standards over the years. Having been in the industry for a long time, I’ve witnessed this positive change firsthand. Although there are still ways to go, I believe my role is to advocate for diversity and inclusivity. It’s important for me to use my platform to speak up about these issues and support the ongoing shift towards a more inclusive representation of beauty in fashion.

HBZVN: Living in Monaco must offer a unique lifestyle. Can you share what your daily life looks like in Monaco.

FRIDA AASEN: Living in Monaco has truly enriched my lifestyle. After many years in a hectic city like New York, I enjoy being able to escape to a more relaxed place like Monaco. I also love the South of France, and the beautiful nature and food it has to offer. Spending more time here gives me the chance to fully unwind after hectic travel schedules and work. My husband is my biggest supporter, always offering me valuable career and business advice.

HBZVN: You’ve had such a diverse career, from runway shows to editorial work. How do you stay grounded and true to yourself in an industry where trends and expectations constantly change?

FRIDA AASEN: Throughout my career, I’ve always viewed my job as a model as a true business. I don’t take myself too seriously, which allows me to genuinely enjoy the experiences that come my way.

I’ve maintained close friendships with many of the same people I grew up with in Norway, which keeps me connected to my roots. Additionally, my family has been an incredible support system, continually reminding me of where I come from and helping me stay true to myself.

HBZVN: What advice would you give to young models who want to maintain their individuality while still succeeding in fashion?

FRIDA AASEN: My advice is simple: Don’t take no for an answer. Persistence is key, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t succeed if you stay true to yourself. Keep pursuing your dreams with determination and always believe in your unique qualities. They are what set you apart in this industry.
